As one of the most sold-overbuilt-911s starts coming off lease their prices are dropping like a rock. I think the whole water cold era will drop in value with it, except for the special cars like GT3s, GT2s, Carrara T, GTS cars, and Turbos.

If that means 997 base and 981 base are becoming more affordable... like 20 grand ...

I can’t really find a complaint about that.

Hell yeah, I might be able to possibly afford a later-model 911 in 5 years!

Haven’t found a non-salvage title 997 with a price like that unless it has about 100,000 miles.

The one you want is a 997.2, which means 2009 model year if you want to avoid IMS issues even though they are rarer on the 997, but not full proof until the refresh. Those won’t come cheap for a while.

Nah, most 997s are north of 30 yet.

But if 991 are pushing lower with depreciation, it is going to pull some buyers in from otherwise buying 997s... spreading the depreciation downward pressure.

They may not be that low yet... but depending on markets and demand effects, prices may decrease in the near to mid-term future.

We can only hope, the 997 is probably the sweetspot for me in terms of performance and expected reliability.

Advanced but not too advanced to become a tech nightmare after warranty.

Though I may just give up and get a Cayman.

Meanwhile 996s are finally creeping back up. At least here.

I keep going back and forth between Boxster, Cayman, and 911 coupe...

997 is a good sweet spot for 911, and 981 was as good as it got, until perhaps 718 GT4 or GTS 4.0 for the mid-engine sports cars.

Yep—go get it. Now is a great time to buy a 996, 987, or 986.

On Autotrader right now, you can get a 997.1 manual  coupe for less than $35k, all day long. Cabriolets are even cheaper.

The Cayman 981 is always  the answer.

I like the 997, but you can still get a 911 SC or non-G50 Carrera for less money. That’s what I would do.

That’s awesome. They really deserve too. Where do you live?

You can get a 997 coupe for $29k these days on Autotrader. I’m less in tune with the 981 prices, but I doubt you can’t find one in that range.

Agreed, the 997.2 will always be a different category--even than the 991. It is the last non-Volkswagen Porsche and it lacks the early water cooled problems like bore-scoring, RMS, and IMS.

I would always get a 997.2 over a 991 base or 991 S.

If I go water cooled, it will be a 991 Carrera T, 997.2, Boxster Spyder,   or Cayman 981.

I may be interested when 991.2 Carreras drop below $50k.

You can afford a Boxster. Everyone can. And it’ s better than a Miata.

Boxster is the answer.
